WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS: alguns poemas

OH NÃO AMEIS POR LONGO TEMPO
W. B. Yeats (1865-1939)

Bem-amada, não ames muito tempo:
Por longo tempo dei o coração,
E vim e me tornar fora de moda
            Como velha canção.

Pelos anos de nossa mocidade
Nenhum de nós podia separar
Seu pensamento do outro,
Pois eles só sabiam concordar.

Mas oh! num só minuto ela mudou:
– Não deis por longo tempo o coração,
Ou ficareis fora de moda
Como velha canção. p.63

O DO NOT LOVE TOO LONG
William Butler Yeats

Weetheart, do not love too long:
I loved long and long,
And grew to be out of fashion
Like an old song.

All through the years of our youth
Neither could have known
Their own thought from the other's,
We were so much at one.

But O, in a minute she changed:
– O do not love too long,
Or you will grow out of fashion
Like an old song.

AMIGAS
W. B. Yeats (1865-1939)

Devo louvar agora as três
Mulheres que teceram a alegria
Que nos meus dias se irradia:
Uma porque nem breve pensamento,
Nem os cuidados permanentes,
Não, não durante estes quinze anos
Muitas vezes turbados,
Jamais puderam se interpor
Entre um espírito e outro deleitados;
Conto o meu bem, conto o meu mal,
Acordado por causa dela,
Lembrando tudo o que ela era então,
Que olhar de águia mostra ainda:
E sobe de meu coração
Uma doçura tão infinda,
Que tremo da cabeça aos pés. p.69

FRIENDS
William Butler Yeats

Now must I these three praise
Three women that have wrought
What joy is in my days;
One that no passing thought,
Nor those unpassing cares,
No, not in these fifteen
Many times troubled years,
Could ever come between
Heart and delighted heart;
And one because her hand
Had strength that could unbind
What none can understand,
What none can have and thrive,
Youth’s dreamy load, till she
So changed me that I live
Labouring in ecstasy.
And what of her that took
All till my youth was gone
With scarce a pitying look?
How could I praise that one?
When day begins to break
I count my good and bad,
Being wakeful for her sake,
Remembering what she had,
What eagle look still shows,
While up from my heart’s root
So great a sweetness flows
I shake from head to foot.

UM CASACO
W. B. Yeats (1865-1939)

Fiz um casaco de meu canto
e recobri-o com bordados
de velhos mitos retirados:
pescoço aos pés, forrava tanto.
Porém os tolos, dando um jeito,
usaram-no, roupa festiva,
no mundo, qual se a houvessem feito.
Seja meu canto assim vestido,
porquanto há mais iniciativa
em caminhar despido. p.71

A COAT
William Butler Yeats

I made my song a coat
Covered with embroideries
Out of old mythologies
From heel to throat;
But the fools caught it,
Wore it in the world’s eyes
As though they’d wrought it.
Song, let them take it
For there’s more enterprise
In walking naked.
